SAPREF contributes to the development of neighbouring communities through a range of sustainable projects, particularly in education. SAPREF’s social investment programme is focused on nine communities in its immediate area.
SAPREF believes that education is one of the best mitigators against poverty. As a result, a major portion of SAPREF’s social investment budget is focused on educational initiatives.
In 2011 SAPREF launched two science laboratories to be used by a cluster of schools in Wentworth and Merebank. This brings the total of SAPREF-sponsored labs at neighbouring communities to six. SAPREF also runs three Saturday Schools in Isipingo and Umlazi to provide high school learners with tuition in maths, science and English.
