SAPREF Island View Marine Terminal
South African Petroleum Refineries (SAPREF) was once a largest Crude Oil Refinery in the Southern Hemisphere from 1963 to 2022 based in Durban, Prospecton area in KwaZulu Natal. The business strategy changed in 2022 when its Shareholders decided to stop the refining operation and rather move into a full Import Terminal after the Refinery assets were sold.
SAPREF base moved to Island View Terminal Precinct where the focus now is on pipelines, Tanks and Jetty Operations. With the capacity of 525,000 m3 of storage capacity, SAPREF receives and distributes over 5 billion litres of liquid full per year via road and rail gantries and as well as the New Multi-Product Pipeline (NMPP) which connects inland to coastal. The products that SAPREF receives and distributes include MOGAS, Diesel, Kerosene, Jet, Avgas, Very-Low Sulphur Fuel Oil and High Sulphur Fuel Oil.
Our Departments
Health Security Safety & Environment Department (HSSE)
Supports the organisation in managing HSSE and Legal risks to deliver Safe, Reliable Operations. Set the standards for management of risks to people, protection of the environment and the community. Ensure that the organisation has the capability to respond to emergency situations including medical response. Assists the business in upholding accreditation to ISO 9001 and 14001 standards, lead the continuous improvement agenda and facilitates the process of Learning from Incidents at our Island View Terminal.
Support Services Department
The Support Services Unit oversees the overall financial management, supply chain, stakeholder management and human resources of the organization. It also handles legal compliance and internal audit functions. Despite the evolving industry and organizational dynamics, the support services unit is expected to maintain high staff engagement and enablement and uphold the code of conduct at all times. The organization depends on the unit to implement cost containment measures through effective internal controls, budgetary controls, and accurate forecasting. Additionally, the unit is responsible for keeping the local communities informed and involved through various activities and CSI projects.
Engineering and Technical Services
The Engineering and Technical Services Department is responsible for the provision of all engineering discipline support; projects execution and provides all the IT (Information Technology) services to SAPREF
Maintenance
The Maintenance Department is responsible for ensuring that SAPREF assets are maintained in compliance with the International Best Practices. The department aims to ensure that the assets are fit for operation, available when needed and operate reliably.
Operations
Our operations consists of Jetty, Tank Farms and Pipeline Network which is responsible for safely receiving Petroleum Products from the Tankers and transferring it to our Storage Tanks for safe keeping and subsequently evacuating to supply our Shareholders Customers via Road & Rail loading and as well as via New Multi-Product Pipeline (NMPP) to Inland.
Hydrocarbon Accounting
Scheduling: Optimization of the Terminal Capacity in collaboration with the Shareholders together with Product Quality Management Hydrocarbon Accounting: Accurately Accounting for the Shareholder Receipts and Deliveries together with Compliance Reporting.
