SAPREF aims to be a good neighbour to surrounding communities through a good standard of environmental performance and continued support of worthy causes that show potential for sustainability. We believe this is the most significant way an organisation can assert its membership of the society within which it operates. In order to make a meaningful contribution to community upliftment, our social investment programme will only support initiatives that promote self-sustainability or capacity building and are conducted by legitimate fundraising, educational or structured community organisations.

The objectives of our social involvement policy:

• To contribute towards a better quality of life in the long term for communities closest to our operational areas;
• To assist in building trust and good relationships with various community organisations and with surrounding communities;
• To build capacity within focus areas to support business needs;
• To be accepted by surrounding communities and by our own people as a caring neighbour and corporate citizen;
• To demonstrate responsibility towards the environment;
• To promote sustainable development and partnerships;
• To address issues which are both meaningful to the community and relevant to SAPREF.

Our social investment spend should be focused on the neighbouring areas on which our operations have a direct impact.
These are:

• Bluff (including Island View)
• Merewent/Merebank
• Wentworth
• Austerville
• Isipingo
• Athlone Park

Until our actual impact on Umlazi, Lamontville and Amanzimtoti has been defined, only sustainable educational and job creation projects will be considered in these areas.
