MEDIA RELEASE
30 October 2006
FIRE AT SAPREF
At about 09:00 on 28 October 2006 a fire occurred at the SAPREF
refinery on a diesel desulphurisation unit. SAPREF’s emergency crew
responded immediately and quickly brought the fire under control.
There were no injuries.
The incident was reported to the relevant authorities. A full
investigation has started to establish the cause of the fire.
The desulphurization unit removes sulphur from diesel fuel and is
one of four such units at the SAPREF refinery. The remainder of the
refinery is operating as normal.
Whilst smoke from the fire was visible and would have caused
concern, the Multipoint Plan air quality data did not reflect any
change to the normal ambient air quality and sulphur dioxide
emissions remained well below SAPREF’s self imposed and permit
levels.
