MEDIA RELEASE
1 February 2007
SAPREF response to the FoE campaign February 2007
SAPREF is committed to continually improving its operational and
environmental performance and has implemented several initiatives to
reduce its environmental impact.
We have invested over R590m in environmental improvements in recent
years; reduced sulphur dioxide emissions by 60% and adhere to a self
imposed target for sulphur dioxide of 20 tons per day averaged over
the year. We have a community liaison forum which meets monthly with
a range of local neighbourhood groups, authorities and SAPREF
management to understand and prioritise community concerns and seek
mutually acceptable solutions.
Although expert opinion informed us that we did not need to
replace our product transfer pipelines, we are investing R340
million to replace all seven of the lines to ensure their integrity
well into the future. Work commenced in 2006 and it is anticipated
will be completed in 2008.
We are actively participating in the local government-led South
Durban Multi-Point plan and have contributed R2.7m to this
initiative. Our annual audited stakeholder report tracks health,
safety, environmental and social performance.
We remain committed to working with all community groups who are
keen to improve social and environmental conditions in South Durban.
