The teaching of Maths and Science in South Durban schools has received a boost with the establishment of two science laboratories in Merebank and Wentworth today.
The SAPREF-sponsored labs at Merebank and Wentworth Secondary Schools will cater for a total of seven schools, including Ganges Secondary, PR Pather Secondary, Umbilo Secondary, Interfellowship Secondary and Fairvale Secondary. More than 5000 learners from grades 8-10 will benefit from the project.
The R800 000 project involved converting a classroom at the schools into a fully-equipped science laboratory, complete with work benches, cupboards, Bunsen burners, science kits and chemicals. In addition, six computers, a data projector and a screen for each school are part of the package to aid teaching and learning. The equipment and technology was selected in consultation with the Department of Education to meet the new curriculum objectives.
To strengthen the link between science theory and practical experience, SAPREF has established six science labs in schools, three in Umlazi and one each in Lamontville, Merebank and Wentworth since 2004,
Says SAPREF MD Bart Voet: “These initiatives support the quality of the learning and teaching. They are part of a wider response by SAPREF to the call to uplift conditions in schools, especially in the area of maths, science and technology. SAPREF is grateful for the guidance of the Department of Education and the input from our neighbouring communities in developing these projects.”
KZN MEC for Education, Mr Senzo Mchunu concurred, adding that partnerships with the private sector will go a long way in helping the government to fulfill its mandate of providing quality education for every child.
