SAPREF Refinery Shutdown |

During the heavy storm on the night of 11 March, the boilers at the SAPREF refinery tripped resulting in the loss of utilities such as steam. This necessitated the refinery being safely shutdown with resultant flaring. |

BEE FIRMS CLINCH BUNKER BARGES CONTRACT |

In a deal worth some USD 75 million over five years, two BEE barge operators are to take over the supply of bunker fuel to ships in the port of Durban for SAPREF. Presently about 60% of bunker fuel is supplied by pipeline in the port and the contracts will enable a move to full bunker barge delivery. This follows previous notification from the National Port Authority and South African Port Operator (NPA/SAPO) that the use of pipelines for delivering bunkers in the Container Terminal and New Pier would cease |

undergoing a planned maintenance shutdown since 26 June 2006, is
in the process of starting up all units that were involved. The
refinery commenced start up of the boilers on 23 August 2006 and
has been progressively starting units since then. |

SAPREF started a major maintenance
shutdown at the Prospecton refinery this week following two
years of forward planning. The shutdown will extend over eight
weeks, from 26 June to 26 August for normal maintenance work on
a number of units. At the same time the refinery will take the
opportunity to do some project work to improve the reliability
of certain equipment.

The equipment, which looks like a lawnmower, is called an "Interrogator" and is being used to gather data for SAPREF's petroleum pipeline replacement project.

A leaflet has been produced by the environmental task team of the Sapref Community Liaison Forum (CLF) to help South Durban residents identify odours and their possible causes. It lists odours as well as possible sources. The leaflet also explains the process when odours are reported to the eThekwini Health Department or to Sapref. |

LION Project exceeds BEE targets |

SAPREF's R700 million cleaner fuels project (called LION) has exceeded its target for Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) procurement, with R150 million of the South African based capital expenditure going to BEE companies. This equates to a BEE spend of total procurement and contracts of 31% exceeding the 25% target set for 2005. At the same time, SAPREF's focus on providing employment for south Durban residents in the construction of the LION project has resulted in 70 percent of the nearly 1445 people employed so far coming from neighbouring communities. |
