SAPREF is committed to being transparent about its activities and environmental performance. In line with this, we will be giving regular updates of the emission levels in the refinery. Our intention is to build on this information over time. We welcome your comments and suggestions in this regard.

Sulphur Dioxide (SO2)
During 2007, SAPREF’s annual average SO2 (sulphur dioxide) was 14t/d, which is well below the 20 t/d limit. Effective from 2006, the Scheduled Trade Permit requires that SO2
emissions from 22 t/d up to and exceeding 25 t/d be investigated and reported. There were two reportable events during 2007, primarily due to the sulphur recovery unit trip and a startup of the FCCU (catcracker) coupled with compressor problems.

Nitrogen Oxide (NOx)
NOx (nitrogen oxide) emissions increased from 1301 tons in 2006 to 1369 tons in 2007. This figure was slightly higher than the 2007 target of 1300 tons per annum. NOx emissions are a function of the amount of fuel oil that is consumed. Low Nox burners continue to be specified for new installations..

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
VOC emissions increased slightly from 3529 tons during 2006 to 3963 tons in 2007. The leak detection survey by SNC Lavalin (Canada) continued during 2007. This project is aimed at quantifying fugitive emissions and repairing the identified sources.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)
Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions increased from 978 kilotons in 2006 to 1059 kilotons in 2007. The primary cause of the increase was higher fuel consumption during 2007.
